How Does Getting Paid to Play Games As A Video Game Tester Work?
Posted on | October 30, 2009 | 9 Comments
In case you were wondering, this blog is about how to become a video game tester and make money playing games. Now if you’re like most people who start out trying to do this, you likely set your goals a little too high, trudge along for a little while, then give up when it doesn’t work out for you. Well no more of that, young man! What you should do is learn how this whole thing works, then start trying to grab a piece of the action.
If you want to learn how to get paid to play online games or make money playing any type of games, for that matter, you should first realize Why You Can Get Paid to Play Games. After you do that, start working on your portfolio. What I did was really go through the internet looking for information on how to get paid to play games. I start trying to figure out just how to get paid to play flash games online but I ended up learning a lot more about the industry.
There are some really great sites, like Learn C++ out there to teach you about programming (which, while not required for a video game testing job, is still nice to know so you can tell your prospective employer you are well informed in programming too). I also went out to search for the places that were actually hiring video game quality assurance testers. It was a little difficult at first, but you get the hang of it. Don’t stick too close to the classifieds because they won’t give you an accurate information on who is really hiring- go to corporate offices yourself and check them out.
After all this I learned a lot about what quality assurance testers and video game testers in general do. I also learned that it’s harder to learn how to get paid to play video games free. You won’t be able to really fulfill your goals if you aren’t really willing to pay for a great resource. Well, maybe you will, but I couldn’t learn how to do what I do now without the great resource I suggest over on the side bar. Anyway, you should definitely figure out some way to learn as much as possible about what video game quality assurance testers do and how they do it so that you aren’t left confused on how you’re going to break into the career field.
The last thing I did, or, well, actually am still doing, is create connections in the industry. Now I’m majoring in video game programming at DeVry where I live, so it was pretty easy to find a teacher and talk with them about finding places to test games at, and even some places that would let me be an intern for a video game company. Sign up to this site’s newsletter for some helpful tips as I find them on getting connections in the video game field. For now, all that I can give you is a link to the International Game Developers Association
